About Coastal Kent

Book a Kent holiday cottage on the coast and indulge in a slice of history. The Kent Coast is long and varied, extending from the marshy Medway estuary to the wild shingle outcrop at Dungeness and including the famed oyster beds of Whitstable, pretty Victorian seaside resorts of Broadstairs and Hythe, and the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. A 163-mile walk following the ancient Saxon Shore Way from Gravesend to Hastings illustrates the dramatic changes to the coastline during the 1,500 years since Kent was an independent Kingdom, long predating the Kingdom of England. These changes were the result of natural processes like storms as well as deliberate activities and have resulted in the creation of valuable habitats for wildlife as well as fertile farmland reclaimed from the sea. The strategic significance of the Channel coast is exemplified by the number and variety of defensive structures, such as Henry VIII's castles at Deal and Walmer and Martello Towers built to repel Napoleon at Folkestone and Dymchurch and the magnificent Dover Castle guarding the narrow straits for over 2000 years.
